Encaustic Art Blessings Project

I am starting a new project called Blessings. I am going to do a video each week documenting my process. This is my first video so please be kind!

The first step in my blessings birthday project…

The cutting with an X-acto knife was much more difficult than I was expecting! I got them all completed (a little wabi sabi) but I love the first marks on each of these.

Just a little background about how I chose black alcohol ink for my lettering. In order to use encaustic medium on a piece, it needs to have an absorbent ground.

The illustration board is absorbent, but if I were to start my lettering with acrylic paint that substrate would no longer be absorbent. Alcohol ink is still absorbent and you could also use india ink, charcoal or even watercolors as an underlayer before you add the encaustic wax.

If you didn’t want to use illustration board, you could use a cradled wood panel or even a piece of raw recycled wood. You could use a piece of watercolor paper but it would need to be adhered to a rigid surface. Wax is heavy and it would weigh down a surface that is not rigid.

Start your own mixed media project! Use the supplies that you have on hand to make your first marks. We’ll start next week with our first technique.

A Life Update (that takes your breath away)

Do you ever have something happen in your life that just affects you so deeply that it takes your breath away? Well, that just happened to me!

I became a Grandma! Congratulations to my son and daughter-in-law on the birth of their baby boy, Wyatt! You two will make the best parents and I can’t wait to watch Wyatt grow into his own personality.

Baby Wyatt

When I first saw my son holding his son, it was so emotional! I had tons of other grandparents telling me that you won’t believe how it feels. Now I know!

I feel re-energized because this new life is going to be a part of my life, so I better get organized! I’m going to need to have an art area that is baby safe! That’s going to be my motivation to create a schedule and stick to it! (You notice that this post isn’t on a Tuesday either) Hee Hee!

I hope you have something happen in your life that takes your breath away!!

Procrastination — does it control you?

How long has it been since my last post? Too long! I am guilty of procrastinating everything that has to do with technology! My personal goal is to complete something artistic every day. Easy peasy! My Technology goal is to publish a post every other week preferably on Tuesdays. Guess what — it’s Thursday and it’s been forever since my last post!! Why do I procrastinate so much in this area?

My answer is because writing is not second nature for me. Does it come naturally for you? Life gets in the way so easily and quickly that the days just fly by! School has started and my youngest is now a Junior in high school! I can’t believe it! And for my next post I will have a big life update to share with you!

Fall Exhibit of Work from Local Artists

In the meantime, we have an Exhibit up at the Elk Grove Village Public Library in the Large Meeting Room. If you are local, please stop in when the room is not being used and take a look at all the beautiful art that is for sale from local artists. There is so much talent out there! If you are looking for a piece of art for your home, see if you can find something that speaks to you at the library. The exhibit will be up until the middle of September.

Small Steps

Whatever is on your to-do list that you keep putting off, stop procrastinating! Try to do something small, like this small blog post! It is a step in the right direction! Let me know what you keep procrastinating with (so I don’t feel so alone with this problem)! I have a lot of new art that is being finished for a Juried Art Show. I will share with you each of those pieces very soon!

Happy Labor Day!!

Tired of the same old baby shower games? Try this instead!

We had a successful baby shower for my son and daughter-in-law! Instead of traditional baby shower games, I wanted something crafty! My niece designed graphics and cut them out on a vinyl iron-on fabric. I had all different sizes of onesies and some bibs. The guests went into the Onesie Creation Station where they chose their design and ironed it on the chosen onesie. I then hung a clothesline so each guest could hang their creation. It was so much fun as you can see from the clothesline pictured below!!

Onesie Creation Station

My niece is doing this as a side business! She is terrific at it and enjoys making every party unique! I will link her info here so you can use her services yourself! https://www.facebook.com/3-Ring-Circus-Designs-101160317904792/

I also finished the piece of art that I needed for my dining room. It turned into an abstract landscape and then I mounted a peacock feather to each side of the center canvas on a painted background. Here’s the completed wall:

In case you couldn’t tell, I really enjoy decorating my home with my art and I enjoy having party guests create something beautiful too!

You can never have too much creativity surrounding you! Get creative today!

Work in progress – Art for my walls

Art for your walls - this peacock feather will be part of my art installation in my dining room wall

I am having a baby shower at my house on Sunday for my son and daughter-in-law so I am swamped cleaning and organizing the house. I was wondering if this ever happens to you? I am going room by room and all of a sudden, my husband chimes in. He says we need a new piece of art on this wall. I no longer can stand even looking at the art that I have on that wall even though I have loved that piece since it came into our home!

In order to start a piece of art for my walls, here is my art process: I find a canvas that will fit the space. The canvas that I found is a recycled piece that my son found someone discarding at his condo. I primed it white and went at it! It was busy — too busy! I left it on the wall for a week before I decided the size was wrong.

Now I find a couple long, skinny canvases that would look good on either side of this large canvas. I decide I want something more simple. I paint them and they turn into pastel wooden planks. Not bad! I have some feathers in my focal piece so I decide I want to add a large feather to each of these. Then, guess what? I remember that I have 2 peacock feathers in a vase in our entryway that no one probably has ever seen. I’m going to add these to these side panels. See below:

This is a work in progress, remember! So the peacock feather is not even adhered down yet! I like the look of it but it doesn’t go AT ALL with the busy focal canvas. That needs to be redone! I add white gesso to the entire canvas and start over. I know some people have a hard time doing that but for some reason I think I kind of like it. I like starting over with a fresh white base that I can add anything I want to it to get the look that is floating in my head!

So now I am taking the same colors from the background of the peacock canvas and applying them to the large center canvas. Do you know what appears? A landscape! I wasn’t even thinking landscape! At this point I feel like I need to go with it (the party is Sunday).

Here is a photo of my unfinished landscape piece that will hang between 2 peacock feather canvases:

You can really see the texture in this piece now! Hmm, that makes me want to highlight it!

I can’t say that this piece is complete but I promise to take a photo of the wall when it is all finished!

How do you go about getting statement pieces of art on your walls? Do you paint something yourself or head out to a retail store where you get a piece that is just like everyone elses? My recommendation is to find an emerging artist whose work you enjoy and ask for a commission piece for your wall. It will be unique, one-of-a-kind art at a reasonable price!

Keeping the Bees: The Importance of Pollinators

June 16 – August 25, 2019

Did you know that over 75% of the flowering plants on earth rely on animals and insects for pollination, including nearly 75% of our food crops? Without these creatures such as hummingbirds, bats, bees, beetles, butterflies, and flies, these plants would not be able to produce fruits and seeds, which would be devastating to people and the planet. Join Brushwood Center at Ryerson Woods in bringing attention to the importance and plight of the pollinator in this group art exhibition.

Happy Mother’s Day!

alcohol ink flower

To all the beautiful mothers out there, I hope you do something that you enjoy doing on Mother’s Day! Sometimes it’s not about what you’re doing but who you’re with! Sometimes it’s about both!! I’m lucky because I’ve been baking today (something I love doing), working with alcohol inks (see photo above) and I get to spend this weekend with both my Moms and 2 out of the 3 kids! Hope you have a wonderful day!

Creative Mojo – Does a deadline help you?

tree art by Tammy Haman

Life is so busy! I’m sure everyone would agree that you always have more to do on a daily basis than you have hours in the day. My to-do list drains my creative mojo! There are so many other things I need to get done, when I sit down to my creative work, sometimes I can’t get started.

I have to admit a deadline helps me. Does a deadline help you? If you are creative, I highly recommend joining an artist association or art guild in your area. I have talked about my artist association here before but I cannot stress enough how important it is to join an association of like minded artists to get you inspired.

The current exhibit at the Artists’ Association of Elk Grove Village is our annual tree exhibit. I have to admit, I usually don’t sit down and think I really want to paint a tree today. This exhibit has pushed me into my creative zone to get my mojo back! My work is definitely whimsical, sometimes abstract, and always colorful. Having a deadline to make a tree was an excellent way to get creating! Here’s my piece.

Tree Art by Tammy Haman - encaustics piece called Swirling Magic

This exhibit will be at the Elk Grove Village Public Library in Illinois until June 2nd. Stop by to see all the amazing local artists doing their thing! All work is for sale. The exhibit is open whenever the library is open and the large meeting room is open. If you door is closed, just ask at the front desk if you could see the artwork. They love to have visitors walking through the exhibit!

Next month our exhibit will be Small Works! If you’re looking for an affordable piece of art done by a local artist, this is your chance! Let me know if there are other exhibit themes you would like to see!

Local Trees Exhibit

tree art by Tammy Haman

There is a new exhibit at the Elk Grove Village Public Library! If you are local, please stop in to see the fabulous pieces all portraying trees! There are so many unique styles, sure to excite every personal preference. This is a juried show so there are 1st, 2nd, 3rd place ribbons and 5 honorable mentions.

All pieces are for sale and if you see something you are interested in, you can contact our exhibit chairman. P.S. that’s me!!

I have a piece in the show that is called Swirling Magic pictured here. It is a mixed media piece made with encaustic wax. I am really enjoying learning and experimenting with this process.

I begin on a cradled wood panel so framing is not necessary. After adding 3 layers of wax, fusing in between each layer, I then start with the base of the tree. Through melting and layering, adding and subtracting, I get a texture that I just love! The smaller branches are then incised in the wax with oil sticks.

The colors that you see are either oil pastels or pigmented wax buried to create an abstract background.

Encaustics is an ancient art form used to preserve mummies in Egyptian times. It is nothing new but has certainly become much more popular in recent years. I hope you can stop by the library to see the exhibit first hand.

The Elk Grove Village Public Library is located at 1001 Wellington Avenue, Elk Grove Village, IL and the exhibit is in the large meeting room and is open to the public whenever the library is open.

One Inspired Evening 2019

Giving to a worthy cause feels great!

One Inspired Evening is our annual fundraising gala that includes an art auction, silent auction, raffle, and live music. All proceeds from the event go directly to supporting Inspiration Corporation’s mission of helping people who are affected by homelessness and poverty to improve their lives and increase self- sufficiency through the provision of social services, employment training and placement, and housing in an atmosphere of dignity and respect.  (visit inspirationcorporation.org for more info)

Last night I was one of the artists accepted into the juried art show as part of a Gala to raise money for this wonderful organization! One Inspired Evening is an annual Gala that was so much fun!! All of the cooks and servers were people who have benefited from employment training so not only did we get to eat their wonderful food, but we also were able to interact with them and hear their story.

My husband and I enjoying taking silly pictures!

We were at Venue West in Chicago and to my naive suburban upbringing, I was a little concerned when we pulled up. But inside was a wonderful Gala like nothing I have ever been to before!

Here I am with some of the other artists from our local Artists’ Association of Elk Grove Village plus spouses. Each of us had a piece accepted into the show and were sold to the highest bidder! I was so humbled when my piece went just over the value at the last second before the bidding closed! It was such a beautiful and exciting night! I can’t wait for next year!!

Tammy Haman – Artist

The piece I submitted is on the right and is from my FloraVine series. The medium is encaustics with alcohol inks and shellac. I plan on making more in this series!
